2 – A Deeper Look Inside The Rabbit Hole of Utopia – PART III

In Part II we reviewed the heyday of the BBS (Bulletin Board Service) as well as Internet Relay Chat (IRC). In Part III we will focus on the revolutionary changes that came about in the way people shared content and the consequences of those changes. In early 1999, Napster was launched by teenagers who had met each other on a BBS related to hacking by some accounts, and IRC by others. Their goal was clear; make sharing music over the internet easy. Their software utilized Peer-to-Peer technology and took off like wildfire. The growth of their service was explosive even by today’s standards and helped popularize the term “downloading” in many households. At its height, Napster was utilized by more than 70 million users. The calendar year did not close before the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) filed suit on behalf of all five major music labels on December 6, 1999. Eventually the court ordered Napster to pull down all copyright-infringing material and being unable to fully do so, the company shutdown its service on July 1, 2001.
Analysis: The founders of Napster, seeking eventual traditional profits from their service, incorporated the company and in so doing, painted a legal bullseye on their backs for vested interests to target. In legal discovery, communications from one of the founders highlighted a kind of complicity with the copyright-infringement that was rampant on their service. Furthermore, while their software had elements of Peer-to-Peer technology, in that users could share their own content and download from others, the network resources were fully centralized, enabling Napster engineers to attempt to execute the court order and purge their service of infringing content before eventually shutting down. Ultimately, Napster failed because their technology was not fully decentralized, not fully Peer-to-Peer, they exhibited central chokepoints from both a legal and technical perspective.
On July 2, 2001, literally a single day after the Napster central servers were shutdown for good, the first publically available version of the BitTorrent protocol went live. In every way which Napster exhibited fatal flaws during its less than 3 year run, BitTorrent carried the torch with a firmer grip and a longer stride. First, it was an independent and content-agnostic protocol, free from any of the copyright-infringing baggage that the billions and billions of files that would soon be shared using it would carry. Second, it harnessed the awesome power of genuine Peer-to-Peer technology, as “seeders” and “leechers” of files would testify, the bandwidth came from the users themselves, no central servers to target, no central chokepoint to take down. Within 10 years of its release, some reports had BitTorrent traffic representing fully more than half of all internet bandwidth at any given moment in time. The term BitTorrent has become inextricably linked with Peer-to-Peer technology itself and many technically inclined internet users of a certain age, this author included, will lecture you about how the internet simply would not be the same today without the power of BitTorrent.
Think for just a moment how dreadful a place the internet would be if information itself, of a relatively high quality, were not so freely available with a few searches and a little effort. What if when you searched about the “Gulf of Tonkin incident” because you heard that perhaps Vietnam didn’t start the war with the United States, you came across a paywall and were asked to pay $9.99 to learn the historical truth. Just imagine if you decided to research the “USS Liberty incident” because you heard reports that the Israeli military misidentifying the ship as Eqyptian and killing 34 Americans were complete fabrications and Israel knew exactly who it was targeting on that day, but found that reports and in-depth analysis of the events of that day were simply unavailable online because such information was locked up in the vaults of a private corporation and not for sale or distribution.
Can you imagine such an internet for a single moment?
That is how the internet would be with respect to content (Video, Audio, Games, Books) if BitTorrent did not exist. It would be full of holes, paywalls, and dead ends. BitTorrent, and the democratizing nature of content and content distribution represents the very best of the internet in that era. What would happen if this kind of democratizing power were projected unto money itself? That will be the focus of Part IV; the rise of Bitcoin.

3 – Introducing UtopiaLeaks by Orwell

Julian Assange is the speaker of this week’s quote, “One of the best ways to achieve justice is to expose injustice.” He is an Australian activist and publisher who founded Wikileaks in 2006. He is currently in Belmarsh prison, in South-East London, England awaiting extradition hearings to the United States, having been indicted for alleged computer intrusion and subsequently charged with violating the Espionage Act of 1917, a United States federal law being utlized to punish national security leakers.
This publisher, in coordination with a collaborating colleague, Orwell, is pleased to introduce to you a P2P, censorship-resistant, whisteblower-friendly, platform for releasing and distributing secretive material exposing wrongdoing. I’ll let Orwell take it from here:
The channel is called “UtopiaLeaks”, in honour of its older brother and is associated with the uNS record “UTOPIALEAKS”. The Channel ID is 8A03C469E1CDA30C6EA3A63FFA0FBA00. All users who care about seeing injustice exposed are highly encouraged to join the channel in order to give it the P2P robustness it deserves. Investigative journalists from around the world are also encouraged to join the channel and to remain connected in order to receive any files that may be dumped into the channel in the future. Initially, only image files may be shared by users from around the world, but future updates and upgrades to the Utopia client software may allow additional document file types as well. Staying connected to the channel is important because the channel only exists as a Peer-to-Peer forum, meaning image files will only receive initial distribution with whomever is connected at the time of release. It will be up to journalists to authenticate and follow-up on any material that finds it way into the channel. The great news is the channel doesn’t simply offer an encrypted file drop, but also an encrypted chat forum for the leaker to answer questions and share insights. In the future, an accompanying Utopia website may also be developed, but for now this channel should be fit for purpose. Please join today and do whatever you can to spread the word!

An Analysis Of Bitcoin Market Reaction When CME Futures Contracts Expire

An Analysis Of Bitcoin Market Reaction When CME Futures Contracts Expire

https://preview.redd.it/itm2np7xit621.png?width=512&format=png&auto=webp&s=3c9d526c73e9d0ba2720a1859d7133b8ffe64487
https://cryptoiq.co/an-analysis-of-bitcoin-market-reaction-when-cme-futures-contracts-expire/
The Federal Reserve says the Bitcoin Futures on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) are the reason the Bitcoin bear market began. Indeed, the Dec. 17, 2017 launch date of the CME Bitcoin futures coincided with the beginning of Bitcoin’s crash from $20,000 to as low as $3,100 in December 2018.
This is perhaps due to immense short selling pressure combined with the printing of vast quantities of paper Bitcoins on CME. The Bitcoin futures on CME are operated by Globex, the same organization that suppresses global gold prices via the printing of paper gold on COMEX.
Aside from the long term damaging effects on the Bitcoin market, it seems possible that there are shorter term impacts associated with the expiration of futures contracts. The CME Bitcoin futures contracts for a particular month expire on the last Friday of the month, except if there is a holiday in the United Kingdom or United States. A full list of CME Bitcoin futures contract expiration dates can be found at this link.
This expiration date marks the benchmark used to payout profits and losses, and it is possible that futures traders manipulate the price of Bitcoin to optimize their profits. For example, when short selling, a common practice is “banging the close,” in which traders manipulate the underlying asset’s spot price to drop lower to increase profits from short selling. It is also possible for traders in long positions to manipulate the market to go higher right as the expiration happens, which could perhaps also be called “banging the close.”
In this analysis, Crypto.IQ explores the actual data to see if there is any anomalous activity around the time CME futures contracts expire.
First, the CME Bitcoin futures expiration dates are overlaid on a chart from Bitcoinwisdom.com for the entire year of 2018, and there is an additional line for the launch date on Dec. 17, 2017, which makes it extremely clear that the genesis of the CME Bitcoin futures market had a substantial impact on the Bitcoin market from the very beginning.

https://preview.redd.it/8aqln0m0jt621.png?width=970&format=png&auto=webp&s=5751776ddc8cfb25993d8de185a584c7fad59a6a
Without doing any deep analysis, it seems that many significant peaks and dips in the Bitcoin market coincide with the CME Bitcoin futures expiration dates. This would suggest there is plenty of banging the close occurring.
Crypto.IQ will analyze each of these CME Bitcoin future settlement dates individually to get a clearer picture.

https://preview.redd.it/6a0g7ygajt621.png?width=968&format=png&auto=webp&s=81fa6613a62600518ce37e92620ccf545b362175
The line at the left side of the chart shows the date that CME Bitcoin futures launched, Dec. 17, 2017. The line at the right side (not to be confused with the far right line which is the Y axis) shows the date the first Bitcoin futures contract on CME expired, Jan. 26, 2018.
This contract was an extreme win for short sellers, and despite an attempted rally around the 2018 New Year, the market had declined to $11,000 by the time the contract expired. There is no sign that there is an acute case of banging the close, but perhaps banging the close was not even needed at the expiration since the market fell so hard. It is possible that CME futures traders banged the close all month long.

https://preview.redd.it/bogjh9zbjt621.png?width=968&format=png&auto=webp&s=2e9d4eea9893b6319650985d67a814a3dacdee9d
The line in the above chart shows the second CME Bitcoin Futures contracts expiration on February 23. In this case, banging the close seems pretty obvious. An attempted bounce-back rally that peaked five days before the expiration was stomped out, and Bitcoin hit a local minima right around the time the contracts expired. Then the rally re-starts and continues into early March.
The February futures expiration date perhaps gives an understanding of how the CME Bitcoin futures can be very detrimental for the market long term. If traders made short sell bets on Bitcoin, but then Bitcoin begins to have a serious rally, they may coordinate to end the rally. In this case, Bitcoin rallied from $6,000 to nearly $12,000, only to crash below $10,000 when the expiration occurred.
Bitcoin then returned exactly to the peak of this rally near $12,000 once the futures contracts expiration was over. The question is, how high would Bitcoin have rallied if there were not people manipulating the spot market to better their short positions on the futures markets?

https://preview.redd.it/frxwul6djt621.png?width=966&format=png&auto=webp&s=ae017a73be69b350cedb6f00846f4749fbe2f696
The March 29 Bitcoin futures expiration is an excellent example of banging the close. The volume speaks a thousand words, since selling rapidly accelerated and peaked right when the futures contracts for March expired. This futures contracts expiration dropped Bitcoin below $7,000, and it took at least 10 days for the Bitcoin market to recover from this bottom that was likely induced by CME futures-related manipulation. This March expiration is a good example of how a major Bitcoin price crash can be related to the monthly CME Bitcoin futures contracts expiration.

https://preview.redd.it/z43jptdejt621.png?width=966&format=png&auto=webp&s=7011e58f319bea23372cd94745e8e5b5c7805da5
After the catastrophic Bitcoin futures contracts expiration in March, perhaps many traders thought Bitcoin had bottomed out, and a rally soon started after a 10-day recovery period. The rally continued until the April 27 futures contracts expiration, making it an excellent month for long traders. There is an obvious volume peak 2-3 days before the contract expiration, and a $1,000 price crash. It seems possible that this $1,000 price crash was short sellers banging the close to cut losses and perhaps was mitigated by people in long positions banging the close in the other direction.
The turbulence around the futures contracts expiration perhaps significantly slowed the rally. It re-started a few days after the expiration occurred but quickly lost steam and reversed. This may be another example of a bounce-back rally getting rekt by CME Bitcoin futures-related manipulation, but it is impossible to know for sure.

https://preview.redd.it/ptr621kfjt621.png?width=966&format=png&auto=webp&s=09db86fbc9a996a647f6a0df6d37756cffc27d23
Between the April 27 and May 25 CME Bitcoin futures expiration dates, the bounce-back rally was entirely liquidated as short sellers took back the helm. There appears to have been some obvious banging the close activity 3-5 days before the May contracts expired, with high volumes and a $1,000 price crash. The market stopped dropping once the May contracts expired, and was steady until the middle of June.
This brings up another interesting effect of the CME Bitcoin futures. If a crash occurs around the time of contract expiration, then the market usually has some time to ‘relax’ after the expiration. This makes it more clear that banging the close is a serious issue.

https://preview.redd.it/5pvpjnvgjt621.png?width=965&format=png&auto=webp&s=18eef5670218840589f5d0bdc679e3e88bd2429f
The price of Bitcoin once again crawled lower as the June 29 CME Bitcoin futures contract expiration approached and reached a minimum below $6,000 within about a day of the expiration. After the expiration was complete, the market “relaxed” and rallied off lows. The June expiration once again has the tell-tale signs of banging the close.

https://preview.redd.it/bunjz0uhjt621.png?width=970&format=png&auto=webp&s=0b5f7916cc02bfbb607b26f30e47b31ff100514f
Short selling and banging the close lower is not the only option, and perhaps not a good option once Bitcoin has fallen too much. Prior to the July 27 expiration, the market had been rallying, and the rally peaked over $8,000 around the time the expiration occurred. Then the market began declining within days after the July contract expired. This could be a good example of CME futures traders going long, and perhaps helping Bitcoin’s price to go higher. Once they got their long profits, then they may have collectively decided it was time to squeeze money out of short selling again. The timing of the peak of this rally seems too exact to be a coincidence.

https://preview.redd.it/9xzagepqjt621.png?width=970&format=png&auto=webp&s=62941c4fee1827a029601ad629e8837b0a648853
After the July expiration, the market crashed below $6,000 and then began to steadily rise, probably from an overall consensus that the Bitcoin price was near its support level, and it was a good time to buy. There is no sign of banging the close to stop the slight rally when the Aug. 31 expiration occurred. It is important to note that short sellers would have still had nice profits since overall Bitcoin declined $1,000 during August.
A few days after the August contracts expired Bitcoin crashed hard, just like what happened days after the July contracts expired. This brings up the possibility that CME futures traders are doing far more than banging the close. They may be preemptively banging the market right after they buy their monthly contracts, which would cause market panic, widespread selling, and far lower prices than they could achieve from their own manipulation.

https://preview.redd.it/l5kufb1sjt621.png?width=968&format=png&auto=webp&s=9a39cf30b01b591e507fcae3c0fae671b885172d
After the hard crash right after the August expiration, the Bitcoin market went sideways. There is signs of banging the close around the September 28 expiration since volume increased and price dipped right as the expiration occurred. Overall, September was another good month for CME short sellers.

https://preview.redd.it/am8l381tjt621.png?width=970&format=png&auto=webp&s=27ccd94b8fb6aad0c774b55a2971716f6c2e4e61
The trend in October was very flat, and when the expiration happened on Oct. 26, there wasn’t much action. There was almost no change in price during October, and this may have created an environment where an equal amount of longs and shorts were present, and much fewer positions overall. Perhaps when the market does not move much in either direction banging the close does not happen.
November will go down as one of the worst months in 2018 for Bitcoin and the crypto market, however. The Bitcoin Cash fork around Nov. 14 coincided with a crash below Bitcoin’s $5,800 support level. The SEC issued devastating enforcement actions against Paragon (PRG) and Airfox (AIR) and said that would be the protocol for ICO enforcement going forward. Further, Bakkt delayed the launch of physical Bitcoin futures, which is something many investors were looking forward to.
One thing ignored by most people’s market analysis of this crash is that the CME futures traders probably placed large short sell positions and perhaps manipulated the market to crash harder than it should have. The market stopped crashing 4 days before futures contracts expired on Nov. 30, and there appears to be a nice $400 price dip right before the November contracts expired.

https://preview.redd.it/z14l602ujt621.png?width=1024&format=png&auto=webp&s=9549991b93d0f1fb68bc056c290b95642bc38319
Zooming in on the Nov. 30 contracts expiration makes it obvious that the close was banged to lock in maximum short selling profits for November.
The December 2018 CME futures contracts expire on Dec. 28, and in 2019, the schedule is Jan. 25, Feb. 22, March 29, and June 28. It seems these dates will be important for Bitcoin traders, since as the above analysis shows, the spot market often crashes right when expiration happens on down months, and during up months the rally usually peaks right around the expiration date. Only if the market is totally stable all month, like it was in October 2018, the expiration date does not have much significance.
There is plenty of evidence, based on these charts, that CME Bitcoin futures traders are participating in banging the close to increase their profits. There is also a disturbing trend of the Bitcoin market crashing days after contracts expire. This is perhaps traders who take up short positions for the new month launching their ammunition early to cause a major crash, which is perhaps more profitable for them than the small movements they can cause when banging the close. Multiple bounce-back rallies in 2018 died days after contracts expired, which is likely simultaneous with CME futures traders taking up their short positions.
Another worrisome factor is that any actual bad news, like the Bitcoin Cash fork and SEC enforcement, may be blood in the water for CME futures traders. The November crash ended right before the contracts for November expired, making it seem like the CME futures traders launched their ammunition to crash the market when the market was already crashing due to bad news, greatly amplifying the overall crash.
Perhaps the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) should consider that the relatively small size of Bitcoin, which has less than a $100 billion market cap, is inappropriate for Globex futures since it is too easy to manipulate.

Crypto Investing Guide: Useful resources and tools, and how to create an investment strategy

Lots of people have PM'd me asking me the same questions on where to find information and how to put together their portfolio so I decided to put a guide for crypto investors, especially those who have only been in a few months and are still confused.
Many people entered recently at a time when the market was rewarding the very worst type of investment behavior. Unfortunately there aren't many guides and a lot of people end up looking at things like Twitter or the trending Youtube crypto videos, which is dominated by "How to make $1,00,000 by daytrading crypto" and influencers like CryptoNick.
So I'll try to put together a guide from what I've learned and some tips, on how to invest in this asset class. This is going to be Part 1, in another post later I'll post a systematic approach to valuation and picking individual assets.

Getting started: Tools and resources

You don't have to be a programmer or techie to invest in crypto, but you should first learn the basics of how it functions. I find that this video by 3Blue1Brown is the best introduction to what a blockchain actually is and how it functions, because it explains it clearly and simply with visuals while not dumbing it down too much. If you want a more ELI5 version with cute cartoons, then Upfolio has a nice beginner's intro to the blockchain concept and quick descriptions of top 100 cryptocurrencies. I also recommend simply going to Wikipedia and reading the blockchain and cryptocurrency page and clicking onto a few links in, read about POS vs POW...etc. Later on you'll need this information to understand why a specific use case may or may not benefit from a blockchain structure. Here is a quick summary of the common terms you should know.
Next you should arm yourself with some informational resources. I compiled a convenient list of useful tools and sites that I've used and find to be worthy of bookmarking:
Market information
Analysis tools
Portfolio Tracking
Youtube
I generally don't follow much on Youtube because it's dominated by idiocy like Trevon James and CryptoNick, but there are some that I think are worthy of following:

Constructing a Investment Strategy

I can't stress enough how important it is to construct an actual investment strategy. Organize what your goals are, what your risk tolerance is and how you plan to construct a portfolio to achieve those goals rather than just chasing the flavor of the week.
Why? Because it will force you to slow down and make decisions based on rational thinking rather than emotion, and will also inevitably lead you to think long term.

Setting ROI targets

Bluntly put, a lot of young investors who are in crypto have really unrealistic expectations about returns and risk.
A lot of them have never invested in any other type of financial asset, and hence many seem to consider a 10% ROI in a month to be unexciting, even though that is roughly what they should be aiming for.
I see a ton of people now on this sub and on other sites making their decisions with the expectation to double their money every month. This has lead a worrying amount of newbies putting in way too much money way too quickly into anything on the front page of CoinMarketCap with a low dollar value per coin hoping that crypto get them out of their debt or a life of drudgery in a cubicle. And all in the next year or two!
But its important to temper your hype about returns and realize why we had this exponential growth in the last year. The only reason we saw so much upward price action is because of fiat monetary base expansion from people FOMO-ing in due to media coverage. People are hoping to ride the bubble and sell to a greater fool in a few months, it is classic Greater Fool Theory. That's it. Its not because we are seeing any mass increase in adoption or actual widespread utility with cryptocurrency. We passed the $1,000 psychological marker again for Bitcoin which we hadn't seen since right before the Mt.Gox disaster, and it just snowballed the positivity as headline after headline came out about the price growth. However those unexciting returns of 10% a month are not only the norm, but much more healthy for an alternative investment class. Here are the annual returns for Bitcoin for the last few years:
Year BTC Return
2017 1,300%
2016 120%
2015 35%
2014 -60%
2013 5300%
2012 150 %
Keep in mind that a 10% monthly increase when compounded equals a 313% annual return, or over 3x your money. That may not sound exciting to those who entered recently and saw their money go 20x in a month on something like Tron before it crashed back down, but that 3X annual return is better than Bitcoin's return every year except the year right before the last market meltdown and 2017. I have been saying for a while now that we are due for a major correction and every investor now should be planning for that possibility through proper allocation and setting return expectations that are reasonable.
How to set a realistic ROI target
How do I set my own personal return target?
Basically I aim to achieve a portfolio return of roughly 385% annually (3.85X increase per year) or about 11.89% monthly return when compounded. How did I come up with that target? I base it on the average compounded annual growth return (CAGR) over the last 3 years on the entire market:
Year Total Crypto Market Cap
Jan 1, 2014: $10.73 billion
Jan 1, 2017: $615 billion
Compounded annual growth return (CAGR): (615/10.73)1/3 = 385%
My personal strategy is to sell my portfolio every December then buy back into the market at around the beginning of February and I intend to hold on average for 3 years, so this works for me but you may choose to do it a different way for your own reasons. I think this is a good average to aim for as a general guideline because it includes both the good years (2017) and the bad (2014). Once you have a target you can construct your risk profile (low risk vs. high risk category coins) in your portfolio. If you want to try for a higher CAGR than about 385% then you will likely need to go into more highly speculative picks. I can't tell you what return target you should set for yourself, but just make sure its not depended on you needing to achieve continual near vertical parabolic price action in small cap shillcoins because that isn't sustainable.
As the recent January dip showed while the core cryptos like Bitcoin and Ethereum would dip an X percentage, the altcoins would often drop double or triple that amount. Its a very fragile market, and the type of dumb behavior that people were engaging in that was profitable in a bull market (chasing pumps, going all in on a microcap shillcoin, having an attention span of a squirrel...etc) will lead to consequences. Just like they jumped on the crypto bandwagon without thinking about risk adjusted returns, they will just as quickly jump on whatever bandwagon will be used to blame for the deflation of the bubble, whether the blame is assigned to Wall Steet and Bitcoin futures or Asians or some government.
Nobody who pumped money into garbage without any use case or utility will accept that they themselves and their own unreasonable expectations for returns were the reason for the gross mispricing of most cryptocurrencies.

Risk Management

Quanitifying risk in crypto is surprisingly difficult because the historical returns aren't normally distributed, meaning that tools like Sharpe Ratio and other risk metrics can't really be used as intended. Instead you'll have to think of your own risk tolerance and qualitatively evaluate how risky each crypto is based on the team, the use case prospects, the amount of competition and the general market risk.
You can think of each crypto having a risk factor that is the summation of the general crypto market risk (Rm) as ultimately everything is tied to how Bitcoin does, but also its own inherent risk specific to its own goals (Ri).
Rt = Rm +Ri
The market risk is something you cannot avoid, if some China FUD comes out about regulations on Bitcoin then your investment in solid altcoin picks will go down too along with Bitcoin. This (Rm) return is essentially what risk you undertake to have a market ROI of 385% I talked about above. What you can minimize though is the Ri, the aset specific risks with the team, the likelihood they will actually deliver, the likelihood that their solution will be adopted. Unfortunately there is no one way to do this, you simply have to take the time to research and form your own opinion on how risky it really is before allocating a certain percentage to it. Consider the individual risk of each crypto and start looking for red flags:
  • guaranteed promises of large returns (protip: that's a Ponzi)
  • float allocations that give way too much to the founder
  • vague whitepapers
  • vague timelines
  • no clear use case
  • Github with no useful code and sparse activity
  • a team that is difficult to find information on or even worse anonymous
While all cryptocurrencies are a risky investments but generally you can break down cryptos into "low" risk core, medium risk speculative and high risk speculative
  • Low Risk Core - This is the exchange pairing cryptos and those that are well established. These are almost sure to be around in 5 years, and will recover after any bear market. Bitcoin, Litecoin and Ethereum are in this class of risk, and I would also argue Monero.
  • Medium Risk Speculative - These would be cryptos which generally have at least some product and are reasonably established, but higher risk than Core. Things like ZCash, Ripple, NEO..etc.
  • High Risk Speculative - This is anything created within the last few months, low caps, shillcoins, ICOs...etc. Most cryptos are in this category, most of them will be essentially worthless in 5 years.
How much risk should you take on? That depends on your own life situation but also it should be proportional to how much expertise you have in both financial analysis and technology. If you're a newbie who doesn't understand the tech and has no idea how to value assets, your risk tolerance should be lower than a programmer who understand the tech or a financial analyst who is experienced in valuation metrics.
Right now the trio of BTC-ETH-LTC account for 55% of the market cap, so between 50-70% of your portfolio in low Risk Core for newbies is a great starting point. Then you can go down to 25-30% as you gain confidence and experience. But always try to keep about 1/3rd in safe core positions. Don't go all in on speculative picks.
Core principles to minimize risk
  • Have the majority of your holdings in things you feel good holding for at least 2 years. Don't use the majority of your investment for day trading or short term investing.
  • Consider using dollar cost averaging to enter a position. This generally means investing a X amount over several periods, instead of at once. You can also use downward biased dollar cost averaging to mitigate against downward risk. For example instead of investing $1000 at once in a position at market price, you can buy $500 at the market price today then set several limit orders at slightly lower intervals (for example $250 at 5% lower than market price, $250 at 10% lower than market price). This way your average cost of acquisition will be lower if the crypto happens to decline over the short term.
  • Never chase a pump. Its simply too risky as its such an inefficient and unregulated market. If you continue to do it, most of your money losing decisions will be because you emotionally FOMO-ed into gambling on a symbol.
  • Invest what you can afford to lose. Don't have more than 5-10% of your net worth in crypto.
  • Consider what level of loss you can't accept in a position with a high risk factor, and use stop-limit orders to hedge against sudden crashes. Set you stop price at about 5-10% above your lowest limit. Stop-limit orders aren't perfect but they're better than having no hedging strategy for a risky microcap in case of some meltdown. Only you can determine what bags you are unwilling to hold.
  • Diversify across sectors and rebalance your allocations periodically. Keep about 1/3rd in low risk core holdings.
  • Have some fiat in reserve at a FDIC-insured exchange (ex. Gemini), and be ready to add to your winning positions on a pullback.
  • Remember you didn't actually make any money until you take some profits, so take do some profits when everyone else is at peak FOMO-ing bubble mode. You will also sleep much more comfortably once you take out the equivalent of your principal.

Portfolio Allocation

Along with thinking about your portfolio in terms of risk categories described above, I really find it helpful to think about the segments you are in. OnChainFX has some segment categorization but I generally like to bring it down to:
  • Core holdings - essentially the Low Risk Core segment
  • Platform segment
  • Privacy segment
  • Finance/Bank settlement segment
  • Enterprise Blockchain solutions segment
  • Promising/Innovative Tech segment
This is merely what I use, but I'm sure you can think of your own. The key point I have is to try to invest your medium and high risk picks in a segment you understand well, and in which you can relatively accurately judge risk. If you don't understand anything about how banking works or SWIFT or international settlement layers, don't invest in Stellar. If you have no idea how a supply chain functions, avoid investing in VeChain (even if it's being shilled to death on Reddit at the moment just like XRB was last month).
What's interesting is that often we see like-coin movement, for example when a coin from one segment pumps we will frequently see another similar coin in the same segment go up (think Stellar following after Ripple).
Consider the historic correlations between your holdings. Generally when Bitcoin pumps, altcoins dump but at what rate depends on the coin. When Bitcoin goes sideways we tend to see pumping in altcoins, while when Bitcoin goes down, everything goes down.
You should set price targets for each of your holdings, which is a whole separate discussion I'll go in Part 2 of the guide.

Summing it up

This was meant to get you think about what return targets you should set for your portfolio and how much risk you are willing to take and what strategies you can follow to mitigate that risk.
Returns around 385% (average crypto market CAGR over the last 3 years) would be a good target to aim for while remaining realistic, you can tweak it a bit based on your own risk tolerance. What category of risk your individual crypto picks should be will be determined by how much more greed you have for above average market return. A portfolio of 50% core holdings, 30% medium risk in a sector you understand well and 20% in high risk speculative is probably what the average portfolio should look like, with newbies going more towards 70% core and only 5% high risk speculative.
Just by thinking about these things you'll likely do better than most crypto investors, because most don't think about this stuff, to their own detriment.

In the past few days, BTC followed a bearish path below the $8,400 and $8,250 levels against the US Dollar. The BTC/USD pair even settled below the $8,200 support and the 100 simple moving average (4-hours). Finally, there was a break below the $8,000 support and a new monthly low was formed near $7,822. The price is currently consolidating losses and is trading below the $8,000 support.
An immediate resistance is near the $8,000 level or the 23.6% Fib retracement level of the recent decline from the $8,475 swing high to $7,822 low. On the upside, there are many hurdles near the $8,100 and $8,200 levels. Moreover, there is a major bearish trend line forming with resistance near $8,100 on the 4-hours chart of the BTC/USD pair.
Besides, the 50% Fib retracement level of the recent decline from the $8,475 swing high to $7,822 low is also near the $8,150 level. Finally, 100 simple moving average (4-hours) is positioned near the $8,200 level. Therefore, bitcoin price must surpass the $8,100 and $8,200 resistance levels to start a decent recovery. Additionally, a close above the $8,200 barrier and the 100 SMA is needed for more upsides.
